1 Then the LORD said to Job, 2 "Do you still want to argue with the Almighty? You are God's critic, but do you have the answers?" 3 Then Job replied to the LORD, 4 "I am nothing-- how could I ever find the answers? I will cover my mouth with my hand. 5 I have said too much already. I have nothing more to say." 6 Then the LORD answered Job from the whirlwind: 7 "Brace yourself like a man, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them. 8 "Will you discredit my justice and condemn me just to prove you are right? 9 Are you as strong as God? Can you thunder with a voice like his? 10 All right, put on your glory and splendor, your honor and majesty. 11 Give vent to your anger. Let it overflow against the proud. 12 Humiliate the proud with a glance; walk on the wicked where they stand. 13 Bury them in the dust. Imprison them in the world of the dead. 14 Then even I would praise you, for your own strength would save you. 15 "Take a look at Behemoth, which I made, just as I made you. It eats grass like an ox. 16 See its powerful loins and the muscles of its belly. 17 Its tail is as strong as a cedar. The sinews of its thighs are knit tightly together. 18 Its bones are tubes of bronze. Its limbs are bars of iron. 19 It is a prime example of God's handiwork, and only its Creator can threaten it. 20 The mountains offer it their best food, where all the wild animals play. 21 It lies under the lotus plants, hidden by the reeds in the marsh. 22 The lotus plants give it shade among the willows beside the stream. 23 It is not disturbed by the raging river, not concerned when the swelling Jordan rushes around it. 24 No one can catch it off guard or put a ring in its nose and lead it away.
1 GOD then confronted Job directly: 2 "Now what do you have to say for yourself? Are you going to haul me, the Mighty One, into court and press charges?" Job Answers God I'm Ready to Shut Up and Listen 3 Job answered: 4 "I'm speechless, in awe--words fail me. I should never have opened my mouth! 5 I've talked too much, way too much. I'm ready to shut up and listen." God's Second Set of Questions I Want Straight Answers 6 GOD addressed Job next from the eye of the storm, and this is what he said: 7 "I have some more questions for you, and I want straight answers. 8 "Do you presume to tell me what I'm doing wrong? Are you calling me a sinner so you can be a saint? 9 Do you have an arm like my arm? Can you shout in thunder the way I can? 10 Go ahead, show your stuff. Let's see what you're made of, what you can do. 11 Unleash your outrage. Target the arrogant and lay them flat. 12 Target the arrogant and bring them to their knees. Stop the wicked in their tracks--make mincemeat of them! 13 Dig a mass grave and dump them in it--faceless corpses in an unmarked grave. 14 I'll gladly step aside and hand things over to you--you can surely save yourself with no help from me! 15 "Look at the land beast, Behemoth. I created him as well as you. Grazing on grass, docile as a cow-- 16 Just look at the strength of his back, the powerful muscles of his belly. 17 His tail sways like a cedar in the wind; his huge legs are like beech trees. 18 His skeleton is made of steel, every bone in his body hard as steel. 19 Most magnificent of all my creatures, but I still lead him around like a lamb! 20 The grass-covered hills serve him meals, while field mice frolic in his shadow. 21 He takes afternoon naps under shade trees, cools himself in the reedy swamps, 22 Lazily cool in the leafy shadows as the breeze moves through the willows. 23 And when the river rages he doesn't budge, stolid and unperturbed even when the Jordan goes wild. 24 But you'd never want him for a pet--you'd never be able to housebreak him!

I will lay mine hand upon my mouth. 5 Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further. 6 Then answered the LORD unto Job out of the whirlwind, and said, 7 Gird up thy loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me. 8 Wilt thou also disannul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be righteous? 9 Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like him? 10 Deck thyself now with majesty and excellency; and array thyself with glory and beauty. 11 Cast abroad the rage of thy wrath: and behold every one that is proud, and abase him. 12 Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place. 13 Hide them in the dust together; and bind their faces in secret. 14 Then will I also confess unto thee that thine own right hand can save thee. 15 Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox. 16 Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly. 17 He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together. 18 His bones are as strong pieces of brass; his bones are like bars of iron. 19 He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him. 20 Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play. 21 He lieth under the shady trees, in the covert of the reed, and fens. 22 The shady trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about. 23 Behold, he drinketh up a river, and hasteth not: he trusteth that he can draw up Jordan into his mouth. 24 He taketh it with his eyes: his nose pierceth through snares.

He who rebukes God, let him answer it." 3 Then Job answered the LORD and said: 4 "Behold, I am vile; What shall I answer You? I lay my hand over my mouth. 5 Once I have spoken, but I will not answer; Yes, twice, but I will proceed no further." 6 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said: 7 "Now prepare yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me: 8 "Would you indeed annul My judgment? Would you condemn Me that you may be justified? 9 Have you an arm like God? Or can you thunder with a voice like His? 10 Then adorn yourself with majesty and splendor, And array yourself with glory and beauty. 11 Disperse the rage of your wrath; Look on everyone who is proud, and humble him. 12 Look on everyone who is proud, and bring him low; Tread down the wicked in their place. 13 Hide them in the dust together, Bind their faces in hidden darkness. 14 Then I will also confess to you That your own right hand can save you. 15 "Look now at the behemoth, which I made along with you; He eats grass like an ox. 16 See now, his strength is in his hips, And his power is in his stomach muscles. 17 He moves his tail like a cedar; The sinews of his thighs are tightly knit. 18 His bones are like beams of bronze, His ribs like bars of iron. 19 He is the first of the ways of God; Only He who made him can bring near His sword. 20 Surely the mountains yield food for him, And all the beasts of the field play there. 21 He lies under the lotus trees, In a covert of reeds and marsh. 22 The lotus trees cover him with their shade; The willows by the brook surround him. 23 Indeed the river may rage, Yet he is not disturbed; He is confident, though the Jordan gushes into his mouth, 24 Though he takes it in his eyes, Or one pierces his nose with a snare.

Let him who reproves God answer it." 3 Then Job answered the LORD and said, 4 "Behold, I am insignificant; what can I reply to You? I lay my hand on my mouth. 5 "Once I have spoken, and I will not answer; Even twice, and I will add nothing more." 6 Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm and said, 7 "Now gird up your loins like a man; I will ask you, and you instruct Me. 8 "Will you really annul My judgment? Will you condemn Me that you may be justified? 9 "Or do you have an arm like God, And can you thunder with a voice like His? 10 "Adorn yourself with eminence and dignity, And clothe yourself with honor and majesty. 11 "Pour out the overflowings of your anger, And look on everyone who is proud, and make him low. 12 "Look on everyone who is proud, and humble him, And tread down the wicked where they stand. 13 "Hide them in the dust together; Bind them in the hidden place. 14 "Then I will also confess to you, That your own right hand can save you. 15 "Behold now, Behemoth, which I made as well as you; He eats grass like an ox. 16 "Behold now, his strength in his loins And his power in the muscles of his belly. 17 "He bends his tail like a cedar; The sinews of his thighs are knit together. 18 "His bones are tubes of bronze; His limbs are like bars of iron. 19 "He is the first of the ways of God; Let his maker bring near his sword. 20 "Surely the mountains bring him food, And all the beasts of the field play there. 21 "Under the lotus plants he lies down, In the covert of the reeds and the marsh. 22 "The lotus plants cover him with shade; The willows of the brook surround him. 23 "If a river rages, he is not alarmed; He is confident, though the Jordan rushes to his mouth. 24 "Can anyone capture him when he is on watch, With barbs can anyone pierce his nose?
1 MOREOVER, THE Lord said to Job, 2 Shall he who would find fault with the Almighty contend with Him? He who disputes with God, let him answer it. 3 Then Job replied to the Lord: 4 Behold, I am of small account and vile! What shall I answer You? I lay my hand upon my mouth. 5 I have spoken once, but I will not reply again--indeed, twice [have I answered], but I will proceed no further. 6 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, saying, 7 Gird up your loins now like a man; I will demand of you, and you answer Me. 8 Will you also annul (set aside and render void) My judgment? Will you condemn Me [your God], that you may [appear] righteous and justified? 9 Have you an arm like God? Or can you thunder with a voice like His? 10 [Since you question the manner of the Almighty's rule] deck yourself now with the excellency and dignity [of the Supreme Ruler, and yourself undertake the government of the world if you are so wise], and array yourself with honor and majesty. 11 Pour forth the overflowings of your anger, and look on everyone who is proud and abase him; 12 Look on everyone who is proud and bring him low, and tread down the wicked where they stand [if you are so able, Job]. 13 [Bury and] hide them all in the dust together; [and] shut them up [in the prison house of death]. 14 [If you can do all this, Job, proving yourself of divine might] then will I [God] praise you also [and acknowledge that] your own right hand can save you. 15 Behold now the behemoth (the hippopotamus), which I created as I did you; he eats grass like an ox. 16 See now, his strength is in his loins, and his power is in the sinews of his belly. 17 He moves his tail like a cedar tree; the tendons of his thighs are twisted together [like a rope]. 18 His bones are like tubes of bronze; his limbs [or ribs] are like bars of iron. 19 [The hippopotamus] is the first [in magnitude and power] of the works of God [in animal life]; [only] He Who made him provides him with his [swordlike tusks, or only God Who made him can bring near His sword to master him]. 20 Surely the mountains bring him food, where all the wild animals play. 21 He lies under the lotus trees, in the covert of the reeds in the marsh. 22 The lotus trees cover him with their shade; the willows of the brook compass him about. 23 Behold, if a river is violent and overflows, he does not tremble; he is confident, though the Jordan [River] swells and rushes against his mouth. 24 Can any take him when he is on the watch, or pierce through his nose with a snare?

I put my hand over my mouth. 5 I spoke once, but I have no answer- twice, but I will say no more." 6 Then the LORD spoke to Job out of the storm: 7 "Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. 8 "Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself? 9 Do you have an arm like God's, and can your voice thunder like his? 10 Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor, and clothe yourself in honor and majesty. 11 Unleash the fury of your wrath, look at every proud man and bring him low, 12 look at every proud man and humble him, crush the wicked where they stand. 13 Bury them all in the dust together; shroud their faces in the grave. 14 Then I myself will admit to you that your own right hand can save you. 15 "Look at the behemoth, which I made along with you and which feeds on grass like an ox. 16 What strength he has in his loins, what power in the muscles of his belly! 17 His tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are close-knit. 18 His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like rods of iron. 19 He ranks first among the works of God, yet his Maker can approach him with his sword. 20 The hills bring him their produce, and all the wild animals play nearby. 21 Under the lotus plants he lies, hidden among the reeds in the marsh. 22 The lotuses conceal him in their shadow; the poplars by the stream surround him. 23 When the river rages, he is not alarmed; he is secure, though the Jordan should surge against his mouth. 24 Can anyone capture him by the eyes, or trap him and pierce his nose?

Will you condemn me that you may be in the right? 9 Have you an arm like God, and can you thunder with a voice like his? 10 "Adorn yourself with majesty and dignity; clothe yourself with glory and splendor. 11 Pour out the overflowings of your anger, and look on everyone who is proud and abase him. 12 Look on everyone who is proud and bring him low and tread down the wicked where they stand. 13 Hide them all in the dust together; bind their faces in the world below. 14 Then will I also acknowledge to you that your own right hand can save you. 15 "Behold, Behemoth, which I made as I made you; he eats grass like an ox. 16 Behold, his strength in his loins, and his power in the muscles of his belly. 17 He makes his tail stiff like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are knit together. 18 His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like bars of iron. 19 "He is the first of the works of God; let him who made him bring near his sword! 20 For the mountains yield food for him where all the wild beasts play. 21 Under the lotus plants he lies, in the shelter of the reeds and in the marsh. 22 For his shade the lotus trees cover him; the willows of the brook surround him. 23 Behold, if the river is turbulent he is not frightened; he is confident though Jordan rushes against his mouth. 24 Can one take him by his eyes, or pierce his nose with a snare?
