1 O my people, listen to my instructions. Open your ears to what I am saying, 2 for I will speak to you in a parable. I will teach you hidden lessons from our past-- 3 stories we have heard and known, stories our ancestors handed down to us. 4 We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the LORD, about his power and his mighty wonders. 5 For he issued his laws to Jacob; he gave his instructions to Israel. He commanded our ancestors to teach them to their children, 6 so the next generation might know them-- even the children not yet born-- and they in turn will teach their own children. 7 So each generation should set its hope anew on God, not forgetting his glorious miracles and obeying his commands. 8 Then they will not be like their ancestors-- stubborn, rebellious, and unfaithful, refusing to give their hearts to God. 9 The warriors of Ephraim, though armed with bows, turned their backs and fled on the day of battle. 10 They did not keep God's covenant and refused to live by his instructions. 11 They forgot what he had done-- the great wonders he had shown them, 12 the miracles he did for their ancestors on the plain of Zoan in the land of Egypt. 13 For he divided the sea and led them through, making the water stand up like walls! 14 In the daytime he led them by a cloud, and all night by a pillar of fire. 15 He split open the rocks in the wilderness to give them water, as from a gushing spring. 16 He made streams pour from the rock, making the waters flow down like a river! 17 Yet they kept on sinning against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert. 18 They stubbornly tested God in their hearts, demanding the foods they craved. 19 They even spoke against God himself, saying, "God can't give us food in the wilderness. 20 Yes, he can strike a rock so water gushes out, but he can't give his people bread and meat." 21 When the LORD heard them, he was furious. The fire of his wrath burned against Jacob. Yes, his anger rose against Israel, 22 for they did not believe God or trust him to care for them. 23 But he commanded the skies to open; he opened the doors of heaven. 24 He rained down manna for them to eat; he gave them bread from heaven. 25 They ate the food of angels! God gave them all they could hold. 26 He released the east wind in the heavens and guided the south wind by his mighty power. 27 He rained down meat as thick as dust-- birds as plentiful as the sand on the seashore! 28 He caused the birds to fall within their camp and all around their tents. 29 The people ate their fill. He gave them what they craved. 30 But before they satisfied their craving, while the meat was yet in their mouths, 31 the anger of God rose against them, and he killed their strongest men. He struck down the finest of Israel's young men. 32 But in spite of this, the people kept sinning. Despite his wonders, they refused to trust him. 33 So he ended their lives in failure, their years in terror. 34 When God began killing them, they finally sought him. They repented and took God seriously. 35 Then they remembered that God was their rock, that God Most High was their redeemer. 36 But all they gave him was lip service; they lied to him with their tongues. 37 Their hearts were not loyal to him. They did not keep his covenant. 38 Yet he was merciful and forgave their sins and did not destroy them all. Many times he held back his anger and did not unleash his fury! 39 For he remembered that they were merely mortal, gone like a breath of wind that never returns. 40 Oh, how often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved his heart in that dry wasteland. 41 Again and again they tested God's patience and provoked the Holy One of Israel. 42 They did not remember his power and how he rescued them from their enemies. 43 They did not remember his miraculous signs in Egypt, his wonders on the plain of Zoan. 44 For he turned their riv into blood, so no one could drink from the streams. 45 He sent vast swarms of flies to consume them and hordes of frogs to ruin them. 46 He gave their crops to caterpillars; their harvest was consumed by locusts. 47 He destroyed their grapevines with hail and shattered their sycamore-figs with sleet. 48 He abandoned their cattle to the hail, their livestock to bolts of lightning. 49 He loosed on them his fierce anger-- all his fury, rage, and hostility. He dispatched against them a band of destroying angels. 50 He turned his anger against them; he did not spare the Egyptians' lives but ravaged them with the plague. 51 He killed the oldest son in each Egyptian family, the flower of youth throughout the land of Egypt. 52 But he led his own people like a flock of sheep, guiding them safely through the wilderness. 53 He kept them safe so they were not afraid; but the sea covered their enemies. 54 He brought them to the border of his holy land, to this land of hills he had won for them. 55 He drove out the nations before them; he gave them their inheritance by lot. He settled the tribes of Israel into their homes. 56 But they kept testing and rebelling against God Most High. They did not obey his laws. 57 They turned back and were as faithless as their parents. They were as undependable as a crooked bow. 58 They angered God by building shrines to other gods; they made him jealous with their idols. 59 When God heard them, he was very angry, and he completely rejected Israel. 60 Then he abandoned his dwelling at Shiloh, the Tabernacle where he had lived among the people. 61 He allowed the Ark of his might to be captured; he surrendered his glory into enemy hands. 62 He gave his people over to be butchered by the sword, because he was so angry with his own people-- his special possession. 63 Their young men were killed by fire; their young women died before singing their wedding songs. 64 Their priests were slaughtered, and their widows could not mourn their deaths. 65 Then the Lord rose up as though waking from sleep, like a warrior aroused from a drunken stupor. 66 He routed his enemies and sent them to eternal shame. 67 But he rejected Joseph's descendants; he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim. 68 He chose instead the tribe of Judah, and Mount Zion, which he loved. 69 There he built his sanctuary as high as the heavens, as solid and enduring as the earth. 70 He chose his servant David, calling him from the sheep pens. 71 He took David from tending the ewes and lambs and made him the shepherd of Jacob's descendants-- God's own people, Israel. 72 He cared for them with a true heart and led them with skillful hands. 1 Listen, dear friends, to God's truth, bend your ears to what I tell you. 2 I'm chewing on the morsel of a proverb; I'll let you in on the sweet old truths, 3 Stories we heard from our fathers, counsel we learned at our mother's knee. 4 We're not keeping this to ourselves, we're passing it along to the next generation--GOD's fame and fortune, the marvelous things he has done. 5 He planted a witness in Jacob, set his Word firmly in Israel, Then commanded our parents to teach it to their children 6 So the next generation would know, and all the generations to come--Know the truth and tell the stories so their children 7 can trust in God, Never forget the works of God but keep his commands to the letter. 8 Heaven forbid they should be like their parents, bullheaded and bad, A fickle and faithless bunch who never stayed true to God. 9 The Ephraimites, armed to the teeth, ran off when the battle began. 10 They were cowards to God's Covenant, refused to walk by his Word. 11 They forgot what he had done--marvels he'd done right before their eyes. 12 He performed miracles in plain sight of their parents in Egypt, out on the fields of Zoan. 13 He split the Sea and they walked right through it; he piled the waters to the right and the left. 14 He led them by day with a cloud, led them all the night long with a fiery torch. 15 He split rocks in the wilderness, gave them all they could drink from underground springs; 16 He made creeks flow out from sheer rock, and water pour out like a river. 17 All they did was sin even more, rebel in the desert against the High God. 18 They tried to get their own way with God, clamored for favors, for special attention. 19 They whined like spoiled children, "Why can't God give us a decent meal in this desert? 20 Sure, he struck the rock and the water flowed, creeks cascaded from the rock. But how about some fresh-baked bread? How about a nice cut of meat?" 21 When GOD heard that, he was furious--his anger flared against Jacob, he lost his temper with Israel. 22 It was clear they didn't believe God, had no intention of trusting in his help. 23 But God helped them anyway, commanded the clouds and gave orders that opened the gates of heaven. 24 He rained down showers of manna to eat, he gave them the Bread of Heaven. 25 They ate the bread of the mighty angels; he sent them all the food they could eat. 26 He let East Wind break loose from the skies, gave a strong push to South Wind. 27 This time it was birds that rained down--succulent birds, an abundance of birds. 28 He aimed them right for the center of their camp; all round their tents there were birds. 29 They ate and had their fill; he handed them everything they craved on a platter. 30 But their greed knew no bounds; they stuffed their mouths with more and more. 31 Finally, God was fed up, his anger erupted--he cut down their brightest and best, he laid low Israel's finest young men. 32 And--can you believe it?-they kept right on sinning; all those wonders and they still wouldn't believe! 33 So their lives dribbled off to nothing--nothing to show for their lives but a ghost town. 34 When he cut them down, they came running for help; they turned and pled for mercy. 35 They gave witness that God was their rock, that High God was their redeemer, 36 But they didn't mean a word of it; they lied through their teeth the whole time. 37 They could not have cared less about him, wanted nothing to do with his Covenant. 38 And God? Compassionate! Forgave the sin! Didn't destroy! Over and over he reined in his anger, restrained his considerable wrath. 39 He knew what they were made of; he knew there wasn't much to them, 40 How often in the desert they had spurned him, tried his patience in those wilderness years. 41 Time and again they pushed him to the limit, provoked Israel's Holy God. 42 How quickly they forgot what he'd done, forgot their day of rescue from the enemy, 43 When he did miracles in Egypt, wonders on the plain of Zoan. 44 He turned the River and its streams to blood--not a drop of water fit to drink. 45 He sent flies, which ate them alive, and frogs, which bedeviled them. 46 He turned their harvest over to caterpillars, everything they had worked for to the locusts. 47 He flattened their grapevines with hail; a killing frost ruined their orchards. 48 He pounded their cattle with hail, let thunderbolts loose on their herds. 49 His anger flared, a wild firestorm of havoc, An advance guard of disease-carrying angels 50 to clear the ground, preparing the way before him. He didn't spare those people, he let the plague rage through their lives. 51 He killed all the Egyptian firstborns, lusty infants, offspring of Ham's virility. 52 Then he led his people out like sheep, took his flock safely through the wilderness. 53 He took good care of them; they had nothing to fear. The Sea took care of their enemies for good. 54 He brought them into his holy land, this mountain he claimed for his own. 55 He scattered everyone who got in their way; he staked out an inheritance for them--the tribes of Israel all had their own places. 56 But they kept on giving him a hard time, rebelled against God, the High God, refused to do anything he told them. 57 They were worse, if that's possible, than their parents: traitors--crooked as a corkscrew. 58 Their pagan orgies provoked God's anger, their obscene idolatries broke his heart. 59 When God heard their carryings-on, he was furious; he posted a huge No over Israel. 60 He walked off and left Shiloh empty, abandoned the shrine where he had met with Israel. 61 He let his pride and joy go to the dogs, turned his back on the pride of his life. 62 He turned them loose on fields of battle; angry, he let them fend for themselves. 63 Their young men went to war and never came back; their young women waited in vain. 64 Their priests were massacred, and their widows never shed a tear. 65 Suddenly the Lord was up on his feet like someone roused from deep sleep, shouting like a drunken warrior. 66 He hit his enemies hard, sent them running, yelping, not daring to look back. 67 He disqualified Joseph as leader, told Ephraim he didn't have what it takes, 68 And chose the Tribe of Judah instead, Mount Zion, which he loves so much. 69 He built his sanctuary there, resplendent, solid and lasting as the earth itself. 70 Then he chose David, his servant, handpicked him from his work in the sheep pens. 71 One day he was caring for the ewes and their lambs, the next day God had him shepherding Jacob, his people Israel, his prize possession. 72 His good heart made him a good shepherd; he guided the people wisely and well. Will He provide meat for His people?" 21 Therefore the LORD heard and was full of wrath; And a fire was kindled against Jacob And anger also mounted against Israel, 22 Because they did not believe in God And did not trust in His salvation. 23 Yet He commanded the clouds above And opened the doors of heaven; 24 He rained down manna upon them to eat And gave them food from heaven. 25 Man did eat the bread of angels; He sent them food in abundance. 26 He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens And by His power He directed the south wind. 27 When He rained meat upon them like the dust, Even winged fowl like the sand of the seas, 28 Then He let them fall in the midst of their camp, Round about their dwellings. 29 So they ate and were well filled, And their desire He gave to them. 30 Before they had satisfied their desire, While their food was in their mouths, 31 The anger of God rose against them And killed some of their stoutest ones, And subdued the choice men of Israel. 32 In spite of all this they still sinned And did not believe in His wonderful works. 33 So He brought their days to an end in futility And their years in sudden terror. 34 When He killed them, then they sought Him, And returned and searched diligently for God; 35 And they remembered that God was their rock, And the Most High God their Redeemer. 36 But they deceived Him with their mouth And lied to Him with their tongue. 37 For their heart was not steadfast toward Him, Nor were they faithful in His covenant. 38 But He, being compassionate, forgave their iniquity and did not destroy them; And often He restrained His anger And did not arouse all His wrath. 39 Thus He remembered that they were but flesh, A wind that passes and does not return. 40 How often they rebelled against Him in the wilderness And grieved Him in the desert! 41 Again and again they tempted God, And pained the Holy One of Israel. 42 They did not remember His power, The day when He redeemed them from the adversary, 43 When He performed His signs in Egypt And His marvels in the field of Zoan, 44 And turned their rivers to blood, And their streams, they could not drink. 45 He sent among them swarms of flies which devoured them, And frogs which destroyed them. 46 He gave also their crops to the grasshopper And the product of their labor to the locust. 47 He destroyed their vines with hailstones And their sycamore trees with frost. 48 He gave over their cattle also to the hailstones And their herds to bolts of lightning. 49 He sent upon them His burning anger, Fury and indignation and trouble, A band of destroying angels. 50 He leveled a path for His anger; He did not spare their soul from death, But gave over their life to the plague, 51 And smote all the firstborn in Egypt, The first issue of their virility in the tents of Ham. 52 But He led forth His own people like sheep And guided them in the wilderness like a flock; 53 He led them safely, so that they did not fear; But the sea engulfed their enemies. 54 So He brought them to His holy land, To this hill country which His right hand had gained. 55 He also drove out the nations before them And apportioned them for an inheritance by measurement, And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents. 56 Yet they tempted and rebelled against the Most High God And did not keep His testimonies, 57 But turned back and acted treacherously like their fathers; They turned aside like a treacherous bow. 58 For they provoked Him with their high places And aroused His jealousy with their graven images. 59 When God heard, He was filled with wrath And greatly abhorred Israel; 60 So that He abandoned the dwelling place at Shiloh, The tent which He had pitched among men, 61 And gave up His strength to captivity And His glory into the hand of the adversary. 62 He also delivered His people to the sword, And was filled with wrath at His inheritance. 63 Fire devoured His young men, And His virgins had no wedding songs. 64 His priests fell by the sword, And His widows could not weep. 65 Then the Lord awoke as if from sleep, Like a warrior overcome by wine. 66 He drove His adversaries backward; He put on them an everlasting reproach. 67 He also rejected the tent of Joseph, And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim, 68 But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion which He loved. 69 And He built His sanctuary like the heights, Like the earth which He has founded forever. 70 He also chose David His servant And took him from the sheepfolds; 71 From the care of the ewes with suckling lambs He brought him To shepherd Jacob His people, And Israel His inheritance. 72 So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, And guided them with his skillful hands.
1 GIVE EAR, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth. 2 I will open my mouth in a parable (in instruction by numerous examples); I will utter dark sayings of old [that hide important truth]-- 3 Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. 4 We will not hide them from their children, but we will tell to the generation to come the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, and His might, and the wonderful works that He has performed. 5 For He established a testimony (an express precept) in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, commanding our fathers that they should make [the great facts of God's dealings with Israel] known to their children, 6 That the generation to come might know them, that the children still to be born might arise and recount them to their children, 7 That they might set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but might keep His commandments 8 And might not be as their fathers--a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that set not their hearts aright nor prepared their hearts to know God, and whose spirits were not steadfast and faithful to God. 9 The children of Ephraim were armed and carrying bows, yet they turned back in the day of battle. 10 They kept not the covenant of God and refused to walk according to His law 11 And forgot His works and His wonders that He had shown them. 12 Marvelous things did He in the sight of their fathers in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan [where Pharaoh resided]. 13 He divided the [Red] Sea and caused them to pass through it, and He made the waters stand like a heap. 14 In the daytime also He led them with a [pillar of] cloud and all the night with a light of fire. 15 He split rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink abundantly as out of the deep. 16 He brought streams also out of the rock [at Rephidim and Kadesh] and caused waters to run down like rivers. 17 Yet they still went on to sin against Him by provoking and rebelling against the Most High in the wilderness (in the land of drought). 18 And they tempted God in their hearts by asking for food according to their [selfish] desire and appetite. 19 Yes, they spoke against God; they said, Can God furnish [the food for] a table in the wilderness? 20 Behold, He did smite the rock so that waters gushed out and the streams overflowed; but can He give bread also? Can He provide flesh for His people? 21 Therefore, when the Lord heard, He was [full of] wrath; a fire was kindled against Jacob, His anger mounted up against Israel, 22 Because in God they believed not [they relied not on Him, they adhered not to Him], and they trusted not in His salvation (His power to save). 23 Yet He commanded the clouds above and opened the doors of heaven; 24 And He rained down upon them manna to eat and gave them heaven's grain. 25 Everyone ate the bread of the mighty [man ate angels' food]; God sent them meat in abundance. 26 He let forth the east wind to blow in the heavens, and by His power He guided the south wind. 27 He rained flesh also upon them like the dust, and winged birds [quails] like the sand of the seas. 28 And He let [the birds] fall in the midst of their camp, round about their tents. 29 So they ate and were well filled; He gave them what they craved and lusted after. 30 But scarce had they stilled their craving, and while their meat was yet in their mouths, 31 The wrath of God came upon them and slew the strongest and sturdiest of them and smote down Israel's chosen youth. 32 In spite of all this, they sinned still more, for they believed not in (relied not on and adhered not to Him for) His wondrous works. 33 Therefore their days He consumed like a breath [in emptiness, falsity, and futility] and their years in terror and sudden haste. 34 When He slew [some of] them, [the remainder] inquired after Him diligently, and they repented and sincerely sought God [for a time]. 35 And they [earnestly] remembered that God was their Rock, and the Most High God their Redeemer. 36 Nevertheless they flattered Him with their mouths and lied to Him with their tongues. 37 For their hearts were not right or sincere with Him, neither were they faithful and steadfast to His covenant. 38 But He, full of [merciful] compassion, forgave their iniquity and destroyed them not; yes, many a time He turned His anger away and did not stir up all His wrath and indignation. 39 For He [earnestly] remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that goes and does not return. 40 How often they defied and rebelled against Him in the wilderness and grieved Him in the desert! 41 And time and again they turned back and tempted God, provoking and incensing the Holy One of Israel. 42 They remembered not [seriously the miracles of the working of] His hand, nor the day when He delivered them from the enemy, 43 How He wrought His miracles in Egypt and His wonders in the field of Zoan [where Pharaoh resided] 44 And turned their rivers into blood, and their streams, so that they could not drink from them. 45 He sent swarms of [venomous] flies among them which devoured them, and frogs which destroyed them. 46 He gave also their crops to the caterpillar and [the fruit of] their labor to the locust. 47 He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamore trees with frost and [great chunks of] ice. 48 He [caused them to shut up their cattle or] gave them up also to the hail and their flocks to hot thunderbolts. 49 He let loose upon them the fierceness of His anger, His wrath and indignation and distress, by sending [a mission of] angels of calamity and woe among them. 50 He leveled and made a straight path for His anger [to give it free course]; He did not spare [the Egyptian families] from death but gave their beasts over to the pestilence and the life [of their eldest] over to the plague. 51 He smote all the firstborn in Egypt, the chief of their strength in the tents [of the land of the sons] of Ham. 52 But [God] led His own people forth like sheep and guided them [with a shepherd's care] like a flock in the wilderness. 53 And He led them on safely and in confident trust, so that they feared not; but the sea overwhelmed their enemies. 54 And He brought them to His holy border, the border of [Canaan] His sanctuary, even to this mountain [Zion] which His right hand had acquired. 55 He drove out the nations also before [Israel] and allotted their land as a heritage, measured out and partitioned; and He made the tribes of Israel to dwell in the tents of those dispossessed. 56 Yet they tempted and provoked and rebelled against the Most High God and kept not His testimonies. 57 But they turned back and dealt unfaithfully and treacherously like their fathers; they were twisted like a warped and deceitful bow [that will not respond to the archer's aim]. 58 For they provoked Him to [righteous] anger with their high places [for idol worship] and moved Him to jealousy with their graven images. 59 When God heard this, He was full of [holy] wrath; and He utterly rejected Israel, greatly abhorring and loathing [her ways], 60 So that He forsook the tabernacle at Shiloh, the tent in which He had dwelt among men [and never returned to it again], 61 And delivered His strength and power (the ark of the covenant) into captivity, and His glory into the hands of the foe (the Philistines). 62 He gave His people over also to the sword and was wroth with His heritage [Israel]. 63 The fire [of war] devoured their young men, and their bereaved virgins were not praised in a wedding song. 64 Their priests [Hophni and Phinehas] fell by the sword, and their widows made no lamentation [for the bodies came not back from the scene of battle, and the widow of Phinehas also died that day]. 65 Then the Lord awakened as from sleep, as a strong man whose consciousness of power is heightened by wine. 66 And He smote His adversaries in the back [as they fled]; He put them to lasting shame and reproach. 67 Moreover, He rejected the tent of Joseph and chose not the tribe of Ephraim [in which the tabernacle had been accustomed to stand]. 68 But He chose the tribe of Judah [as Israel's leader], Mount Zion, which He loved [to replace Shiloh as His capital]. 69 And He built His sanctuary [exalted] like the heights [of the heavens] and like the earth which He established forever. 70 He chose David His servant and took him from the sheepfolds; 71 From tending the ewes that had their young He brought him to be the shepherd of Jacob His people, of Israel His inheritance. 72 So [David] was their shepherd with an upright heart; he guided them by the discernment and skillfulness [which controlled] his hands.

But can he also give us food? Can he supply meat for his people?" 21 When the LORD heard them, he was very angry; his fire broke out against Jacob, and his wrath rose against Israel, 22 for they did not believe in God or trust in his deliverance. 23 Yet he gave a command to the skies above and opened the doors of the heavens; 24 he rained down manna for the people to eat, he gave them the grain of heaven. 25 Men ate the bread of angels; he sent them all the food they could eat. 26 He let loose the east wind from the heavens and led forth the south wind by his power. 27 He rained meat down on them like dust, flying birds like sand on the seashore. 28 He made them come down inside their camp, all around their tents. 29 They ate till they had more than enough, for he had given them what they craved. 30 But before they turned from the food they craved, even while it was still in their mouths, 31 God's anger rose against them; he put to death the sturdiest among them, cutting down the young men of Israel. 32 In spite of all this, they kept on sinning; in spite of his wonders, they did not believe. 33 So he ended their days in futility and their years in terror. 34 Whenever God slew them, they would seek him; they eagerly turned to him again. 35 They remembered that God was their Rock, that God Most High was their Redeemer. 36 But then they would flatter him with their mouths, lying to him with their tongues; 37 their hearts were not loyal to him, they were not faithful to his covenant. 38 Yet he was merciful; he forgave their iniquities and did not destroy them. Time after time he restrained his anger and did not stir up his full wrath. 39 He remembered that they were but flesh, a passing breeze that does not return. 40 How often they rebelled against him in the desert and grieved him in the wasteland! 41 Again and again they put God to the test; they vexed the Holy One of Israel. 42 They did not remember his power- the day he redeemed them from the oppressor, 43 the day he displayed his miraculous signs in Egypt, his wonders in the region of Zoan. 44 He turned their rivers to blood; they could not drink from their streams. 45 He sent swarms of flies that devoured them, and frogs that devastated them. 46 He gave their crops to the grasshopper, their produce to the locust. 47 He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamore-figs with sleet. 48 He gave over their cattle to the hail, their livestock to bolts of lightning. 49 He unleashed against them his hot anger, his wrath, indignation and hostility- a band of destroying angels. 50 He prepared a path for his anger; he did not spare them from death but gave them over to the plague. 51 He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt, the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham. 52 But he brought his people out like a flock; he led them like sheep through the desert. 53 He guided them safely, so they were unafraid; but the sea engulfed their enemies. 54 Thus he brought them to the border of his holy land, to the hill country his right hand had taken. 55 He drove out nations before them and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance; he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes. 56 But they put God to the test and rebelled against the Most High; they did not keep his statutes. 57 Like their fathers they were disloyal and faithless, as unreliable as a faulty bow. 58 They angered him with their high places; they aroused his jealousy with their idols. 59 When God heard them, he was very angry; he rejected Israel completely. 60 He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent he had set up among men. 61 He sent the ark of his might into captivity, his splendor into the hands of the enemy. 62 He gave his people over to the sword; he was very angry with his inheritance. 63 Fire consumed their young men, and their maidens had no wedding songs; 64 their priests were put to the sword, and their widows could not weep. 65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, as a man wakes from the stupor of wine. 66 He beat back his enemies; he put them to everlasting shame. 67 Then he rejected the tents of Joseph, he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim; 68 but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loved. 69 He built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth that he established forever. 70 He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens; 71 from tending the sheep he brought him to be the shepherd of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance. 72 And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.
